VanderSpeel Freek
Band Bio
Four friends, by the grace of God, playing and making music they love. From Alan Jackson to ZZ Top, we cover a lot of stuff. With the ever-growing list of songs of their own, what started as a group of friends looking to get together and play music has grown into something special and all feel truly blessed for what it has become.
Their influences span many genres but at their core, they are a rock band. Listening to their songs, you will hear parts of southern rock, prog, hard rock, pop, country, ballads and even a little folk. Touching on all the styles that made them who they are.

Dave Vanderkaay
Vocals
Dave’s affinity for music was instilled in him at an early age. Growing up, music was always present in the home. Whether it be playing on the home stereo or someone playing one of the various instruments in the house, it was only natural for Dave to take to music. Taking up the saxophone early on before switching to tuba throughout high school and college, it wasn’t until his late teens and early twenties that he found his voice his and love for singing. In fact, Dave met his wife Misty while singing karaoke to Paradise by the Dashboard Light.
Being Gary’s brother-in-law and long time friends with Jeff Creek, Dave was introduced to Jeff Freeman when he was asked to come sing with their band. What began as four guys jamming to music they all enjoyed, has morphed into something bigger than Dave ever imagined. It has forced him to step out of his comfort zone, tap into his creative side, and once again realize what a gift and blessing music truly is.

Gary Speelman
Bass
Gary's love affair for music began at his earliest memories, as a little boy, the band Kiss has always won him over and inspired him thru life. Other bands thru the 70's and 80's, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot and ZZ Top were also great inspiration as he joined the head bangers club. He was not blessed with musical talent as much as he was in sports and girls....
It wasn't till many years later as his children grew up and launched that he "always wanted to learn how to play guitar," and the clear choice was the bass as he wanted to follow his idol, Gene Simmons!
Gary's history with 2 of the 3 band members are deep rooted. The Singer "Dave", he has known since Dave was in 6th grade as Gary was dating and later married Dave's oldest sister Heidi. Gary met the drummer "Jeff", as freshman college classmates in the late 80's. Jeff's Wife, Melanie, and Heidi are also college roommates and best friends. What Gary lacked in musical experience he makes up for with his on stage energy and love of being in a Rock-N-Roll band!

Jeff Creek
Drums
Jeff started playing percussion in the school band when he was around 10 years old. When he was 13 his parents bought his first drum set. He would play for hours to bands like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and The Experience, Yes and Rush. Family life, a road gladly taken, lead Jeff in and out of several bands over the years, including Forgiven (with JD3 guitarist Nate Mosley). Whose CD Main to Mitchell was released in 2002. Meeting 'the other Jeff' in a local adult ice hockey league, they soon found they shared a deep passion for music. They often joked that they needed to 'get the band back together'. After jamming in the basement for a few years, they hit upon a winning formula with the addition of Gary Speelman and Dave VanderKaay.

Jeff Freeman
Guitar
At around 12 years old, Jeff and his brother spent a whopping $10 on a guitar and a 5 watt amp and eagerly tried to learn everything they could. Completely self-taught, playing everything on the radio that was popular in the day.
Being truly blessed with an amazing family and a great career, they took the place of playing regularly. He spent years mostly playing whenever time permitted. In and out of a few bands until one day becoming a regular in the church’s worship team.
It wasn’t until moving to Indiana in 2008 for work, when he met the "other Jeff" in a locker room playing hockey for a local adult league that he started thinking about playing more again. After years of talking about music “the Jeff’s” decided to get together to jam and the rest, as they say, is history.
Early influences included Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Ted Nugent, Rush, and Ozzy.
